Quick Update: Still alive and kickin'

Hey folks, just wanted to give a quick update. I've been deployed for awhile and will be heading back soon and with that I hope to revive the blog. It will take a bit to get resettled but I hope to jump back in within the next few weeks and start writing again. In the mean time make sure to check out all the great gaming blogs I have listed, there is some great stuff out there and I hope I can be as half as good as those folks.

Till then, have fun and keep gaming!

MMO Companies: Seize the Opportunity

For the life of me I can not figure why more gaming companies are not supporting their customers more in ways that no other business can. I'm not talking about increased Customer Service or more servers. I'm talking about fund raising for charities. Sure some companies have done it sporadically...whether its EVE's particpation in MMO Charity calendarsEQ2's charity pets, Free Realms Dinosaurs for Haiti relief or Wizard101 pet tiger mounts for Child's Play.

But these events only seem to come around during the Christmas holiday or large scale events (Haiti). That, to me, is a bit sad. Companies like SOE, CCP, Blizzard and others have the resources and money to really get out there and help these charities and solidify the support and admiration or their fan base, whether it's charity dinners, in game items for sale or other fund raising or awareness events. For example why don't we see in-game pet adoptions during the National Pet Month (May), where half the the purchase price of specialty in-game pet(s) goes toward the ASPCA or other animal charity? MMO players have shown time and again they are more than willing to spend and ready to spend for a good cause, so why not jump on board and provide them the means to do it?

So often it seems to fall on the shoulders of gamers to raise awareness and give to charity. One such group is Gamers Outreach. These folks go out serve the public on several fronts, Project GO Kart and Fun For Our Troops. If you have a few moments, take a look at these projects and the amazing work they do for not only kids in hospitals but our troops serving down range.

There is an amazing potential for these companies to help those in need, raise awareness and really put a positive shine on gaming as a whole that the non-gaming media loves to villanize so often. They just need to seize that opportunity and run with it.

Except that ASPCA idea...I think I may run with that one....

10-09-10: OPERATION P.I.P.

After looking over dates and making sure there were no other conflicting charity events I've finally chosen a date for OPERATION P.I.P, 09 October 2010. I would like to invite as many of you to pass the word out on the gaming sites and blogs and see how many we can get throughout the gaming community to participate.

The Cause

Operation P.I.P is a way for gamers to show support and raise awareness of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Plan

It's easy.

On 09 October, gamers wishing to participate simply log into their favorite game and play in something pink. Pink clothes, armor, weapons or whatever. The idea is to raise awareness and support by wearing the recognized color of Breast Cancer Awareness. When people ask, inform them of what you are doing and encourage them to participate! The more who know the greater the awareness and support is!

Organize pink events! PVP tournaments, raids, group runs, fashion shows or any myriad of player created quests. The possibilities are endless!

The Cost

FREE.

No donations are being taken through this or other OPERATION P.I.P participants. If folks ask about donating, point them to one of the many Breast Cancer Awareness organizations or to their local Cancer research center and encourage them to donate there.

The idea here is to raise awareness and encourage others to give time, money or help to their choice of cancer support groups.

So get out there and spread the word! Lets make OPERATION P.I.P a huge success for breast cancer awareness and something we can make a yearly tradition!

Gamers helping others: Fly vs Car

Want to get a cool iPhone/Pod/Pad game and support Child's Play in the process? Then simply head over to the iTunes store and grab the game Fly vs Car, by Snow Day Games. Half of all sales go in quartely payments to Child's Play.

You get a fun game and Child's Play gets money to support children in hospitals with games.

I call that a pure Win-Win.

Operation PIP (Pew-Pew In Pink)

You may have noticed a few posts by me talking about gamers helping those in need. It's something I really believe in and think there is an incredible amount of power yet to be tapped with gamers. I wanted to share this idea I came up with to support awareness of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I have no real money to organize an event, but I thought I and other gamers could help raise awareness by doing something in the virtual world. Let me know what your thoughts and feelings and if it sounds good, to get the word out and see if we could get other gamers on board.

OPERATION P.I.P (Pew-pew In Pink)

Operation P.I.P involves getting gamers for the month of, or a specific day in, October to show their support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. How would they do this? By logging into to their favorite MMO and get their game on...wearing something pink. It could be clothes, armor, weapons, vehicles, houses, pets, whatever. Just get out there and show that they care. If they have visible profiles maybe they could explain what they are doing and encourage folks to donate to their local Cancer Hospital. You could organize pink raids, pink parties, pink crafting, pink guild events, there are a ton of possibilities with this. It wouldn't cost anyone anything, heck if anything crafters could see a small market open up for a bit. Raise awareness and have fun in game at the same time, a win-win!

Now what does it take to do organize this? Simple, word of mouth through forums, blogs, twitter, etc. Its simple, easy to organize and can be supported across multiple platforms and can raise awareness and (hopefully) increase donations to a worthy cause.

Thoughts?
